In Khujand many animals are stray. They are homeless and uncared for. Most people do not feed them so animals need to find the food from the rubbish and other places. Also, stray animals are often afraid of people.

In 2010, according to Local Health Center nurse, Zulhumor Sattorova, there were 1,086 reported animal bites in the 598-City, 488-District. From the total about 446 were dogs, 125 were cats, 7 were Grison, 14 were rats, and 3 were domestic animals.

For the current 2011 year, people have reported 315 bites from dogs, 59 bites from cats, 1 bite from mammals, and 6 from rats.

“The government is not ready to open an animal shelter. These animals are poor and they have diseases”, said Bobojonov Abdurasul, a salesman ata The Zoo Shop.

“People, who beat them, are unkind. God created animals to live. Dogs and cats do bad things only if somebody makes them to do so. If you teach them to not mess the house they will do good things’, said Vera, a local rescuer of animals who has 5 cats and 2 dogs under her care which she took from the street.

However there are many people who do not love them, “The animals mess all the house, garden, and streets. We must not allow them in to the house” said Husny Zohirova who does not love animals.

If the problem of stray animals is not solved, many animals will grow up in the streets. Some people hope to open an animal shelter in Khujand. Perhaps in the future, Khujand will solve this problem.
